In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

The rise in infertility levels among couples has made IVF a common household name. In Vitro fertilization is a process in which a woman's eggs are retrieved from her ovaries and fertilized with her partner's sperm under aseptic laboratory conditions to form embryos. Later the embryos are transferred into the uterus.

IVF has been suggested only after the initial treatments are unsuccessful. Depending on the couple's medical condition and consent. IVF can also be done using donors' eggs/sperm.

There is no specific age for IVF treatment. It is beneficial for all couples who have failed other infertility treatments.

IVF Process

The entire process takes up to 3 weeks and involves multiple steps and visits to the doctor. Before the start of the process, mandatory medical and blood tests are conducted to check the hormone levels and physical fitness. The different steps of IVF are:

Stimulation - Fertility injections are given to women to increase the number of eggs produced from the ovaries. Multiple eggs increase the chance of developing healthy and viable embryos. During this phase, blood tests and ultrasound scans are done to monitor the egg growth and check the time of their maturation. At the end of this phase, a Trigger is given for Ovum Pick-up.

Egg Retrieval - It is usually scheduled after 34-36 hours after the trigger shot. It is a daycare procedure performed under anesthesia and takes about 30-45 minutes. The number of eggs retrieved depends on the response of the individual to the stimulation process.

Sperm Collection and Fertilization - The fresh semen sample collected from the male partner on the day of the egg retrieval procedure is used for the process. The collected sperm are fertilized with the eggs using the standard method or ICSI in the laboratory to form an embryo.

Embryo Transfer – In this process, embryos are transferred to the uterus for implantation to take place. Usually, one or two embryos are transferred depending on the grade of the embryos.

A pregnancy blood test is done after 2 weeks of the transfer to check if the implantation has occurred and gestation has been achieved.
