Couples have a strong desire to conceive a child at some point in their lifetime. Where most couples achieve pregnancy in one year of trying, others are unable to conceive within 12 months. The inability to conceive after a year of unprotected intercourse is called as infertility.
Infertility may be caused due to many causes and both men and women can be responsible. Are there any treatments for this? What are infertility treatments for men and women?
With advancements in science, many treatments are available today. With time these treatments get better and more & more couples are conceiving using these techniques.
Usually, women above the age of 35 have low chances of conceiving and possibility of miscarriage increase. So doctors may skip some steps taken by younger couples.
Plan Your Infertility Treatment
Before you start with any treatment, talk with your partner about how far you are ready to go with the treatment. What kind of treatment you want to take, surgery or medicine. These treatments can be emotionally and financially draining. It is good to set your limits and move forward with the treatment.
Depending on the cause of infertility in men or women, treatments are prescribed by doctors.
Doctors will suggest some initial treatments depending upon the causes, if these don’t work then the couple may try assisted reproductive technology.
Some initial treatments are:
TREATMENT FOR MEN
Doctors suggest an insemination first. In this method, a specially prepared or washed sperm is inserted directly into the uterus through a thin, flexible catheter during IUI.
If this method is chosen, the doctor might recommend that you take fertility drugs as well, to increase the chances of fertilization. This is done in cases where men have slow-moving or lower quality sperm or a low-sperm count.
TREATMENT FOR WOMEN
Treatment may depend on the cause of what is keeping the woman from conceiving. When the cause is known, doctors suggest a treatment.
Issues connected with ovulating: Regarding issues related with ovulating doctors suggest medicines like Clomiphene to stimulate ovaries to release eggs and Metformin to treat PCOD.
Unknown reasons for infertility: When the doctor is unable to identify the cause of infertility then hormone injections and Clomiphene are given as treatments.
Damaged or blocked fallopian tubes: If the fallopian tube may be blocked or damaged a tubal surgery is required.
Endometriosis: Doctors suggest a laparoscopic surgery for removal of endometrial tissue growth in case of mild endometriosis. Though this is not the right option in case of severe endometriosis.
However, it is important to understand that even if you conceive by these treatments, these methods don’t guarantee a healthy baby.
It is best to take the advice of an expert doctor at the FSIVF and Research Center and seek more information about these treatments.
